Typing Speed Test: How to Improve Your WPM
A typing speed test measures words per minute (WPM) and accuracy. Average is around 40 WPM; 70+ is fast. The good news: WPM is very trainable.
How WPM is measured
One "word" is standardized as five characters, so WPM = (characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Accuracy matters too — speed with mistakes is not real speed.
What actually raises your WPM
- Touch typing — don't look at the keyboard; let muscle memory build.
- Accuracy first, speed second — clean reps train the right habit.
- Short daily practice — a few minutes a day beats one long session.
